Uruguay has had remarkable long-term success in raising living standards while resisting the negative impact of Covid. Real GDP per capita increased by 98% since 1995, a large margin of expansion compared to its South American peers, up by 64% and more than the 70% rise experienced by all Frontier Markets.

Uruguay benefits from good governance and low inequality compared to other South American states. The corruption perceptions index stands at 73, better than the 67 value of the United States and far better than neighbours Brazil and Argentina both with low scores of 38. Economic growth is also promoted by Uruguay’s large middle-class while the Gini measure of inequality 70% of Brazil and a sustainable level of government debt to GDP at 53%.
