Africa

Updated: March 2024

Key Insights
  • African GDP and Population data are both of very poor quality. Governance is also rated as being very poor, with many autocratic rulers interfering with economic data quality.
  • Only 4% of African countries are rated as having A or B grade GDP data. The same percentage applies for Population data. Only 11% are rated as having A or B grade Governance. And eight of the top ten largest (by GDP) sub-Saharan countries are rated as having D or E grade data.
  • In these circumstances World Economics believes pan African GDP or Population size, or measures such as GDP per Capita or Debt per Capita dependent on either GDP or Population data, should be treated with circumspection.
  • More detailed information on African economic data will be produced in the first quarter of 2024.

GDP DATA QUALITY

Data Quality Ratings are derived from scores in five areas: Base year recency; System of National Accounts framework version; Informal economy size; Statistical resources available; and likelihood of Government interference. Scores are based on a 0-100 scale. Read more...

The percentages in the table below show how the number of countries in each region score on a scale of A-E, e.g. 4% of African countries publish grade B quality GDP data. The percentages for each sub-region are the splits within the region. (All rows sum to 100).
