Security risks periodically cause coverage gaps, sampling delays, and difficulties in maintaining accurate sub-national demographic data.
  • Extractive Sector Volatility and Artisanal Mining: While industrial gold mining exports are tracked through official customs, capturing value addition across artisanal gold mining networks, informal processing channels, and unrecorded cross-border trade remains complex and subject to substantial estimation gaps.
  • Fiscal Shortfalls and Survey Operations: The INSD faces ongoing budgetary limitations, which restrict its ability to maintain updated administrative business registers, fully deploy modern digital data tools, and maintain regular intervals between foundational benchmark censuses and household living conditions surveys.
  • Dependence on External Technical Assistance: Major statistical initiatives, including periodic national accounts rebasings to align with international standards (SNA 2008) and regional West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU/UEMOA) frameworks, rely heavily on technical support and co-funding from international development partners and regional bodies like AFRISTAT.
