Italy

Updated: July 2026

Key Insights
  • Data Quality
The quality of Italy’s GDP and Population data is rated A and B grade respectively by World Economics. It is therefore a reliable source for economic and demographic analysis.

  • GDP Growth
Italian GDP growth has been low in relation to global comparisons, but very average in European terms, over the last decade. For example, for its share of global growth over the last decade, Italy ranks 25th globally, but 6th within Europe.

  • Demographics
Italy’s fertility rate has been in decline over recent decades and is currently sub-replacement at 1.1%. This has led to a demographic shift where there is a decreasing amount of working-age people available to support the ever-increasing proportion of retirees in the population. Where in 2000 there was around 4 workers to each retiree, by 2050 UN projections show there will only be 1.5 workers to each retiree. Currently, Italy has the third highest Old Age Dependency in Europe at 38.8%. Moreover, it is the country with the highest Median Age in Europe at 46.8. The elderly consume more resources, both in terms of pensions and medical and care costs, than any other age demographic. Therefore, the declining amount of workers to support the increasing amount of non-workers will mean the tax burden on the working population will become increasingly unsustainable.

  • Debt
Italy has the second largest Government debt in the Eurozone and it is forecast to rise to around 138% of GDP in 2026. This debt burden will become an increasing problem due to the financial cost of Italy’s aging population.

INEQUALITY

The Inequality Index shown below is derived from the Gini Inequality Coefficient. Gini Country data varies considerably by date. These variations are recorded in the World Economics database.

The World Economics Inequality Index ranks each country onto a scale of 0-100, a high value indicates a more egalitarian society - and a low value suggests a lot of the national income is in the hands of very few depending upon the unit of measurement. Read more...
