The Cost of Aging Societies Across the EU


 
In 2023, over half of social protection spending in the EU went on the ‘old age’ category. This is equivalent to 10.4% of the combined GDP of the EU. Largely constituted by pensions, spending on this ‘old age’ category has been rising over recent years.

From 2014 to 2023, it is estimated that expenditure on the ‘old age’ category will have risen by 43%. Expenditure on the elderly continues to remain higher than any other listed category, including: healthcare, families, disabilities, unemployment and housing. This is an increasingly unsustainable tax burden which will be placed upon the shoulders of shrinking workforces. Effectively, ever-dwindling workforces will be paying for an ever-increasing number of expensive to maintain, retired elderly people.
