GDP per capita has risen in Vietnam by 243% since 1996, compared with an increase in the Asia-Pacific region of 73% and of 72% in the Frontier Markets. Only 1.9% of the population now live below the poverty line. This success in raising the income of its citizens is somewhat akin to that of China, since the country has a very low World Economics Governance score of 20.3 which places Vietnam in the Repressive category. Vietnam is ranked 142nd out of 153 countries in the World Economics Governance Rankings.
