Half of ASEAN now has Poor Governance

The Governance ratings of 6 of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) declined on the World Economics Governance Index over the last decade. This reflects worsening scores across data reflecting corruption, rule of law, press freedom and political rights.

Half of ASEAN now has Poor Governance

As a result, three countries have been downgraded: Indonesia to C-grade, and both Myanmar and Cambodia to E-grade. Consequently, half of the ASEAN bloc is now rated poor to extremely poor (or D/E-grade) on the Index. However, this is not a trend universal across the group. Brunei and Malaysia have both been upgraded to B-grade in that same period. Still, the decline of Myanmar and Cambodia into E-grade – to join Vietnam and Laos who remained there – presents an increasingly alarming world for investors for whom Good Governance should be paramount.
