Indonesia

Key Insights
  • Economy
The data for Indonesia’s GDP and population are rated as C/B grade borderline cases, respectively, and are therefore useable. Using IMF GDP data, modified by World Economics, we estimate Indonesia to be the world’s 6th largest economy. This is calculated using Purchasing Power Parity data, with added estimates to allow for the very out-of-date base year used to compile GDP, plus estimates for the informal economy. In terms of its share of global growth in the past decade, Indonesia ranks 4th with a 3.6% share.

  • Climate Change
Climate change will be a core challenge to Indonesia’s future growth. Indonesia’s capital has experienced one of the largest increases (out of the world’s most populous cities) in the number of days reaching +35c in recent decades. Between 1994-2003, there were only 28 days when temperatures reached over 35c. Between 2014-2023, this had increased to 167 days. This impacts productivity: according to the International Labour Organisation, at 33-34c workers operating at moderate intensity lose half of their labour capacity.

A 2024 report that combines the total damages to agriculture, energy, fisheries, forestry, labour productivity, and from floods, water stress and sea-level rise, projects that Indonesia could lose up to 26.8% of its GDP over that period, under a high emissions scenario, by 2070 (figure 2.15). Most of this loss is estimated to be caused by sea-level rise (figure 2.17).

The ‘Climate Economics Index’ (produced by the global insurer Swiss Re in 2021) estimates that Indonesia could lose 39.5% of its GDP by 2048 under a ‘severe stress’ climate pathway, including 3.2c global warming. Under a ‘moderate stress’ pathway this would fall to 4.4%. These potential figures reflect Indonesia’s particular vulnerability to sea-level rise, drought, flooding and heat stress.

The accumulating evidence of damage from climate change is already having a negative impact on credit risk assessment. Factoring in a range of physical damages from climate change, Indonesia is currently rated as having high credit exposure by Moody’s.

  • Demographics
Due to a falling fertility rate, Indonesia is estimated to become an ‘aged society’ by 2050 (following the WHO’s definition). The potential consequence, particularly given the demographic stresses, is that Indonesia gets old before it can become rich (with stagnant GDP-per-capita levels), hence preventing its climb to developed nation status.

POPULATION DATA QUALITY

The Population Data Quality Rating is derived from three factors: a country's latest Census Year; its Capacity for producing statistical data; and its Registration of Births data. Read more...

The three components are weighted to form the Population Data Quality Index.
