Pakistan

Updated: November 2025

Key Insights
  • Data Quality
Pakistan’s GDP and population data are rated D and E respectively by World Economics and should therefore be used with considerable caution.

  • Poor Governance
Pakistan is rated E grade on the Governance Index. This is due to a weak rule of law, censorship and high corruption perceptions. This means that the Government is untrustworthy and may have interfered in the production of economic data. Hence, GDP size, growth and all demographic data are unreliable, as is all derived data such as GDP per capita. World Economics has previously shown why good Governance is crucial for investors.

  • Size and Growth of GDP
Given the poor quality of economic and demographic data – as well as a poor Governance rating – we believe making anything other than broad judgements of the size of Pakistan’s economy to likely produce misleading results. However, given World Economics calculations using Purchasing Power Parity data from the World Bank (including factoring in adjustments for out-of-date GDP base year data, and estimates of the size of Pakistan’s informal economy), we believe that Pakistan is probably the 24th largest country in the world in GDP terms.

  • Vulnerability to Climate Change
Climate change will have a deleterious impact on Pakistan. The World Bank’s Country Climate and Development Report projects a possible 20% reduction in annual GDP by 2050 due to the combined risks of extreme climate-related events, environmental degradation, and air pollution, under a pessimistic scenario.

Extreme heat is a specific issue as Pakistan already has some of the highest observed temperatures in Asia. Following the E3ME climate pathway, in an extreme and pessimistic scenario, it is estimated Pakistan could lose 10% of its GDP by 2050 due to the impact of heat, as well as flooding, on infrastructure, agriculture and productivity (see figure 2.2 of report).

Under a high-growth and high-warming (3°C by 2047) scenario, water demand is projected to increase by almost 60% in Pakistan. This is an issue as Pakistan is already judged by the Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas to be facing high water stress. Climate models project that drought events are also likely to intensify in frequency.

Pakistan has some of the poorest air quality globally. In the Asia-Pacific region, only India and Afghanistan have poorer quality air on the Environmental Index. The World Bank has previously projected that air pollution alone could lower Pakistan’s GDP by 6.5% per year by 2050.

Overall, South Asia will be one of the most impacted regions due to climate change. One report projects a future income reduction of around 22% in the region – of which Pakistan is a sizeable part. Asset valuations are also likely to respond negatively to accumulating evidence of climate change damage to Pakistan’s GDP, specifically in the areas of heat, flooding and water stress.

  • Debt
Pakistan’s debt-to-GDP ratio is high. Large, consecutive yearly deficits have created an increasing debt burden. Repayments are likely to start impacting the country’s budget, reducing the amount of money available to provide essential public services.

  • Demographics
Pakistan is experiencing a decline in its fertility rate which has fallen by a near 50% since 1970. However, the current rate of 3.6% will mean the population will continue to explode. Current projections suggest that Pakistan may be the 4th most populous country globally by 2050 (after India, China and the USA). If job creation fails to match this population boom, it is likely to cause significant social unrest.

POPULATION DATA QUALITY

The Population Data Quality Rating is derived from three factors: a country's latest Census Year; its Capacity for producing statistical data; and its Registration of Births data. Read more...

The three components are weighted to form the Population Data Quality Index.
